Stupid Southern California Edison

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

Our power at home has been off for 15-20 minutes or so now. That’ll pretty well put a damper on any activity for the evening. I find it interesting that when I called their number they said it was an equipment failure affecting about 4500 homes (no ETA for a fix of course), but on their Power Outages page that’s not even listed as a possibility.

Right, because of course it couldn’t be the power companies fault if there was a power outage. It’s must be because of someone else.

Anyhow, I guess we can be thankful for laptops and a router/switch plugged into a UPS. One interesting side note on this is that my normal home page (http://my.yahoo.com) doesn’t seem to be reachable for me. This initially led me to believe I had forgotten to plug the DSL router into the UPS, and that only the wireless access point was on (Safari says network not available when I start up). After trying a traceroute to see how far packets could get though, I noticed they went several hops past my router. Maybe Yahoo uses a local cache that is affected by the same power outage?? It seems like an odd coincidence in any case.
