Stupid Southern California Edison

Our power at home has been off for 15-20 minutes or so now. That’ll pretty well put a damper on any activity for the evening. I find it interesting that when I called their number they said it was an equipment failure affecting about 4500 homes (no ETA for a fix of course), but on their Power Outages page that’s not even listed as a possibility.

Right, because of course it couldn’t be the power companies fault if there was a power outage. It’s must be because of someone else.

Anyhow, I guess we can be thankful for laptops and a router/switch plugged into a UPS. One interesting side note on this is that my normal home page (http://my.yahoo.com) doesn’t seem to be reachable for me. This initially led me to believe I had forgotten to plug the DSL router into the UPS, and that only the wireless access point was on (Safari says network not available when I start up). After trying a traceroute to see how far packets could get though, I noticed they went several hops past my router. Maybe Yahoo uses a local cache that is affected by the same power outage?? It seems like an odd coincidence in any case.

Back in Bla-errr-Mac

Well, after not doing much with this blog for a couple of months, I finally have enough new geek toys to keep me busy and interested in posting stuff. First and foremost would be my hot (no, really) new MacBook Pro. Aside from the fact that it will scald me if I actually try to use it as a laptop and the fact that that screen can’t close flush with the rest of the unit, it’s a pretty slick little machine.

I’ve promised myself I’m going to do some development with it. So far I’ve had a hard time getting my head wrapped around Objective C, but at least Eclipse works pretty well.

In the meantime, I’m really enjoying NetNewsWire, and I’m trying out MarsEdit to see if it’s worth paying money to make blog posting a slightly more enjoyable experience. I’m also half tempted to convert the BabyYates blog over to an iWeb site, but I really don’t want to be locked into editing it from a specific computer or using .Mac for easy publishing. Their templates do look nice though, and of course the media/photo album stuff is as slick as you would expect from Apple.

Hello world!

Well, this is the obligatory first post. It also happens to be my first experience with the new version of WordPress (2.0), and man it is sweet. I was already very impressed with the prior version, used on the Baby Yates site, but the new one is even slicker without losing any of the easy, hit-the-ground-running qualities.

The re-sizeable editing window is truly a slick piece of work.
